Cosmetic Surgery – The Questions You Need To Ask Before You Go Under the Knife.

Monty Python - Cosmetic Surgery

In the world of health and beauty there is no topic more hotly debated than cosmetic surgery.

It is a subject deeply rooted in the modern western world and for decades now there have been endless developments, risks and rumours to contend with.

There are now many different types of cosmetic surgery, and an amazing number of options regarding what plastic surgeons can do. From nose to lips to breasts to butt, it often seems like there isn't a part of the body that cosmetic surgeons can not change.

The stigma has been dropped from many procedures over the years, and in some circles it is almost the social norm to have had some sort of cosmetic surgery.

Are you considering going under the knife?

If you are going to consider cosmetic surgery, before you rush into any type of an operation you need to consider the pros and cons of each procedure you are looking at, and go over the questions you need to ask. It is important that you make an informed decision, as having cosmetic surgery is a move that can alter your life completely.

What are the questions you need to ask?

  • Is what I'm getting from this procedure worth the cost, or am I paying too much for too little?

  • Am I going for a look I have always wanted, or is this just a fad I might regret later? For example, do you really want the Angelina Jolie lips because you like the look, or because that is currently the "sexy style?"

  • Is there something else I can do to improve my feelings about my body? For example, do you really need augmentation to help your self esteem, or could this be achieved with a diet or simply a makeover?

  • Am I considering surgery for me, or am I being pressured into it by somebody else?

  • Are there side effects I haven't considered? For example, if you are contemplating breast augmentation, have you considered what the extra weight will do to your back?

  • Is this procedure reversible if I don't like it?

  • Will I have to abstain from my regular life style to recover for a while? If so, how long?

  • These are all questions that you need to ask yourself. In addition to this, you will want to do research to find the most qualified plastic surgeons in the area.

  • Is there is a big difference in rates? If so, why?

  • Is one really that much better than the other? Is it experience?

  • Who is the specialist?

  • Can you view samples of their work, and read testimonials?

All of these are factors that you can not overlook if you are going to contemplate having any type of a cosmetic procedure done.

It is important that you know the answers to ALL of your questions before going under the knife. As we have discussed, cosmetic surgery may be more socially accepted these days but it still carries risks. Many people find the outcome to outweigh the risks, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make an informed decision.

What is the first step?

Once you have made the decision to have surgery, the first step is to decide exactly what procedure or procedures you would like to have done.

This can be a difficult decision for many. For some people, there is only one issue they have with their body and it is a relatively easy thing to fix it. However, most people have more than one “body hang-up”, and it can be easy to get caught up in trying to design your perfect body.

Try to remember the issue that drove you to make the decision to have cosmetic surgery in the first place, and keep that in mind when you are researching different procedures.

It is a good idea to start by only getting one cosmetic change and letting yourself become accustomed to that before you go into surgery for additional changes.

If you are on a limited budget and want more than one procedure done, consider which procedures are most important to you initially. Is it the nose job, or the tummy tuck? Breast augmentation/reduction, or liposuction? There are many different things to choose from, so decide which is the most pressing issue.

You might want to start with the smallest procedure that you want to have done. This will help you be more relaxed with the cosmetic surgery world and you will have a better idea of what to expect when you have more involved surgery, for example the pain involved and the healing time.

Above all else, make absolutely certain you know this is what you want to do before you take the plunge.

Once a procedure is completed, most of them are permanent. Make sure you know what you want before making a change you may not be able to take back.
